Bill C-17 (Now C-15)— Crimes Against Animals Federal Criminal Code Amendments
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters would like to bring to your attention their concerns about proposed amendments to the Criminal Code that will create new law concerning crimes against animals. They feel, with some justification, that this legislation will open the door for fanatical animal rights groups to bring charges against hunters and fishermen for pursuing their normal hunting and fishing activities. Members are urged to read the comments by Rick Morgan, O.F.A.H. Executive Vice President, in the OFAH insert in the April, 2000 "Ontario Out Of Doors"; There is also an article in the News Section; C-17 causes concern,
on page 12.
The Department of Justice mounted a
Consultation Paper on their web site in the late summer of 1998, requesting submissions from concerned Canadians. As usual, they ignored the comments from groups like farmers, ranchers, hunters, trappers and outfitters, and accepted 17 of the 18 recommendations in this Bill
from animal rights groups! You can review the Department of Justice's paper and news releases (Backgrounder) and OFAH's comments by using the links below.
Grenville Fish & Game Club members are urged to contact their federal Member of Parliament, and express their concerns about Bill C-17 and the devastating effect it could have on Canadians.
Update:
The following articles from the Toronto Star give some idea of how
hunters are being portrayed by the Urban Media:
